Aroma Diffusers & Humidifiers: Cleaning and Care Guide

Regular cleaning is essential for keeping your aroma diffuser or humidifier in top condition. Proper care prevents bacterial buildup, removes mineral residue, and ensures consistent mist output and pleasant fragrance. Follow this guide to safely clean, descale, and maintain your device.

After each use

  1. Unplug the unit and allow it to cool before handling.
  2. Empty the tank – pour out any remaining water. Do not let water sit overnight as it can cause mould or bacterial growth.
  3. Wipe the reservoir with a soft, lint-free cloth or tissue.
  4. Dry completely – leave the tank open to air dry if storing or not using again the same day.

Weekly deep clean

Perform a deeper clean at least once a week (more often in hard-water areas or daily use):

  1. Unplug & disassemble – remove the tank, lid, and any detachable parts. Never submerge the base.
  2. Rinse parts with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a soft sponge or brush to remove residue.
  3. Clean ultrasonic plate or mist outlet using a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar. Gently wipe to dissolve mineral deposits.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove soap or vinegar smell.
  5. Air dry all components before reassembling.

Descaling & residue removal

To keep mist output strong and prevent white film buildup:

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in the tank (about 200–300 ml for small units).
  • Let soak for 10–15 minutes without turning on the device.
  • Empty the solution, rinse well, and wipe the tank dry.
  • For heavy mineral build-up, repeat the process or gently scrub with a soft brush.
  • Use distilled or demineralised water to minimise future scaling.

Removing odours

If your diffuser or humidifier smells stale or oily:

  • Fill halfway with clean water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. Run for 5–10 minutes in a ventilated room.
  • Empty and rinse thoroughly to remove the vinegar smell.
  • For aroma diffusers, avoid mixing incompatible essential oils that may leave lingering residue (e.g. citrus and woody oils).
  • Dry completely before next use.

Filter & wick care (humidifiers)

  • Check weekly for discolouration, odour, or mineral buildup.
  • Rinse in clean water (no soap) to remove dust or residue.
  • Replace filters/wicks every 1–3 months depending on water hardness and usage frequency.
  • Never add essential oils unless the humidifier has a dedicated aroma tray—oils damage filters and void warranty.

Maintenance tips

  • Always use distilled or filtered water for longer device life.
  • Store dry when not in use for long periods.
  • Keep vents and mist outlets clear of dust.
  • Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth—never pour water directly onto the unit.
  • Clean immediately if mist output weakens or unusual odours appear.

What not to do

  • Do not immerse the base or power cord in water.
  • Do not use boiling or hot water to clean the tank—it may warp plastic parts.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners.
  • Do not let water or oil spill into vents or the air outlet.
  • Do not store with water still inside the tank.
